When Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was released in July of 2003, it had a gala, star-studded premiere at Disneyland in California. The same treatment was given to the new Pirates sequel, Dead Man’s Chest, on June 24, 2006. The next two chapters in the movie series (now known as a saga and a franchise) were shot back-to-back in the Bahamas (the third volume is due out in May 2007).
In Dead Man’s Chest, Captain Jack Sparrow owes his newest enemy, Davy Jones, his soul. Jack and Davy Jones are both in a race to find and claim for themselves the fabled “dead man’s chest.” Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley all reprise their roles as Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swann, respectively; while Bill Nighy joins the cast as Davy Jones.
But the new movie isn’t the only exciting addition to the Pirates universe lately: Disney has been at work on some great new projects in other areas of the company that revolve around Cap’n Jack and the crew.
In March 2006, the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction closed for refurbishment at both Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida. While the Disneyland version has already re-opened, the WDW ride will resurface July 7, 2006. Both versions have some very exciting (and familiar) faces joining the abundant cast of Audio-Animatronics pirates. Jack Sparrow, Barbossa, and Davy Jones are all now in the ride!

In addition to the new enhancements to the ride, at Walt Disney World guests will have the chance to interact with an all-new walk-around Jack Sparrow character in a new Adventureland show about how to be a pirate.

Not only are theme parks experiencing the Pirates mania, but several new Disney video games are also being released to promote the new film.

First, there’s the video game based on the movie’s plot line, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. The game is being released on portable platforms such as PSP, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy Advance. Additionally, Captain Jack makes an appearance in the new Kingdom Hearts 2 for PlayStation 2. The game consists of levels based on classic Disney movies and Pirates is one of those films, along with Steamboat Willie, Lilo & Stitch, and other favorites.

Next up is some Pirates promotion as part of the online interactive video game Virtual Magic Kingdom (or “VMK”).* The game allows players to create their own character and explore a virtual Disneyland. No Disneyland would be complete without POTC, of course, so players have the chance to explore the attraction and play a cannon blasting game.
Finally, and most prominently, is the all-new Pirates of the Caribbean Online. Like VMK and Toontown Online, players get to create their own character, this time being a pirate. Players will then captain their own ship and have the chance to compete against their rivals in various battles on the Seven Seas. Players will get to interact with other real online players in real time. Although the game is not yet available**, it is due out in early 2007.
Hope you enjoyed this arrrrticle! Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest sails into theaters July 7, 2006.
*Although Virtual Magic Kingdom was still alive and well when this article was first written, VMK closed its “gates” in May 2008.
**Pirates of the Caribbean Online, although not available at the time this article was written, is indeed now available to play at disney.com/pirates/online.
